TWIN FALLSMIDDLE SCHOOL
PHYSICAL EDUCATION Mrs. Moore, Mr. Weller, Mr Botten Welcome to Raven P.E. It is the goal of the P.E. department for our students to become physically educated students. TWIN FALLS MIDDLE SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION GOALS: 1. To develop a knowledge of a wide range of sports with regards to rules, officiating, techniques, strategy, equipment, safety, and history. 2. To develop a competent skill level in individual, team, and lifetime activities. 3. To encourage a desire for lifetime physical activity and good health practices. 4. To promote the positive physical, emotional, mental, and social qualities in each student. 5. To create and maintain a high level of physical fitness as measured by the President’s Physical Challenge Fitness Test Standards. GRADING: WE BELIEVE EVERY STUDENT HAS THE ABILITY TO BE SUCCESSFUL Students will be graded on the quality of their participation in Physical Education. We define the quality of a student's participation by the level of effort, attitude, sportsmanship, cooperation, attention and preparedness. We believe that students who strive for achievement in those areas will make positive, natural progress in their learning and development, and will have a positive effect on their classmates. Their daily grade in P.E. at Twin Falls will be a reflection of the effort they put into participation and occasional written assignments. Grades will be readily available to be checked for progress. Their daily participation performance is evaluated and then assigned a value that represents one of the following levels. Daily participation points (up to 4) are earned based on your ability to meet the following benchmarks of performance: LEVEL 4: Challenges Self: These students consistently show excellent levels of effort and caring, regardless of ability. They seek extra help from the teacher for skill development and are always willing to help and encourage others. They are motivated to extend their sense of responsibility by being prepared, cooperative, supportive and attentive. They make good decisions; sportsmanship and citizenship are foremost in their minds. Student dresses out in PE Uniform with tennis shoes that tie and provide support and stability. LEVEL 3: Self Directed: These students are able to make good decisions and take responsibility for their choices and actions. They can work without direct supervision and are able to give a high level of effort throughout the class period. They are punctual and prepared for any and all activities presented in class and contribute to a positive classroom environment. Student dresses out in PE Uniform with tennis shoes that tie and provide support and stability. LEVEL 2: Selective Participation: These students show self-control, but they need reminders from time to time about keeping up on effort, staying on task, or being attentive. They are not working to their full potential. Student may be missing part of their PE Uniform or improper footwear. LEVEL 1: Minimal Effort: These students may not fully participate in the day's activities or show much effort, mastery, or improvement. They are able to control their behavior enough so that they don't interfere with another student's right to learn or the teacher's right to teach. They need an undue amount of teacher attention. Student may be missing part of their PE Uniform or improper footwear. LEVEL 0: Unacceptable: These students are unmotivated, unprepared, or undisciplined. Their behavior includes discrediting or making fun of other students, intentionally interrupting the learning process, misusing equipment, using profanity, or being unsafe. Student may be missing part of their PE Uniform or improper footwear. ATTENDANCE: P.E. is a participation based course, so you have to be in class in order to earn all of your points. Make Ups for Absences/Non-participation Days: If a student is injured or ill, a note from home will excuse him/her from some or all participation for that day. He/she, however may be asked to dress and participate in a limited or inactive capacity (for example: scorekeeper, referee, teacher helper, or modified activities). They may be asked to do an alternate written physical education related assignment. A doctor’s note is required to excuse a student from missing more than three consecutive days. Students may need to make up excused non-participation days in order to get credit as is expected in other courses. Student needs to see their individual teacher for the make-up form that requires a parent/guardian signature. TARDY: School tardy policy will be followed, in addition to P.E. grading policies. Three minutes after start of class period, student should be present in attendance line. LOCKERS: The P.E. department will provide you with a combination lock that you are responsible to turn in at the end of the course. Failure to turn in your original lock will result in a P.E. fine (each lost lock will be a separate fine). You will also have a small locker to keep your gym clothes in during the week (t-shirt, shorts or sweats, and athletic shoes). DO NOT share your lock or locker combination with another student. Make sure YOU Lock Your Lock and memorize your locker combination. Please be sure to ONLY USE YOUR LOCK ON YOUR OWN LOCKER. E. are defined as those that tie and provide support and stability. The P.E. uniform is available for purchase at the Student Services Center.
